Responsible Care workshops
Responsible Care workshops took place in Johannesburg and Durban on 03 and 04 June 2010 respectively. The title of the workshops was The Waste Act Requirements and challenges for business. The workshops aimed to assist our members and associates to understand and to prepare for the stringent requirements of new national waste norms and standards applicable to the classification of waste, storage, treatment and disposal, minimization, recycling and recovery as well as contaminated land. The workshops explored specific aspects to be covered by these norms and standards and also covered critical Waste Act requirements including licensing and the responsibilities of the waste holder regarding storage and transport.
Focus topics included the following:
- legal requirements pertaining to waste management
- the waste licensing process and requirements for listed activities
- the national norms and standards for the implementation of remediation activities pertaining to contaminated land and soil quality as per the National Framework for the Management of Contaminated land
- the proposed acceptance criteria for landfill disposal and mobility testing used for the classification of waste
- the general duty of the waste holder pertaining to waste storage and transport
- methodology that will be used for the classification of hazardous waste as well as the requirements for recycling, re-use and recovery

11 and 12 March 2010 respectively. The title of the workshops was Process
Safety a significant challenge! The workshops aimed to assist our
members to understand the benefits of risk reduction for companies via sound
Process Safety Management systems and allowed for the sharing of best practice
amongst chemical companies and their allies. Focus topics included the
following:
- What process safety is, its history, benefits for the chemical
industry and legal framework within South Africa
- The impact of human behaviour on process safety within the chemical
industry
- The new South African Pressure Equipment Regulations
- Chemical Compatibility Charts as a process safety tool
- How to measure process safety performance
- CAIAs process safety role in order to service chemical
industry in South Africa
- Mechanical integrity in process safety
- How to thoroughly investigate process safety incidents in order to
identify the chain of events and causes so that corrective measures can be
developed and implemented

Responsible Care workshops took place in Johannesburg and Durban on
15 and 16 October 2009 respectively. The title of the workshops was Driver
Management Methods of Improving Driver Performance on our Roads and an
update on Recent Changes in the Transport Legislation. The workshops aimed to
assist our members to obtain knowledge of best driver management practices that
should be implemented to appropriately and effectively manage the professional
drivers of heavy commercial vehicles. The objective was to ensure the safer
transportation of chemicals and that lives are saved on the countrys
roads. Focus topics included the following:
- quality professional driver training
- driver health and wellness programmes
- effective driver medical assessment and surveillance
- driver hours and fatigue management
- awareness of road and rail legal requirements and compliance.

Change and Carbon Footprinting. The workshops aimed to assist our members to
identify the ways in which climate change could affect their business and to
create a strategy that will assist to manage the risks and pursue
opportunities. Focus topics included the following:
- business risks associated with climate change
- appropriate corporate responses to these risks
- factors that influence greenhouse gas emission reduction at
corporate level
- technical tools for business
- governments response to climate change
- energy efficiency as cost saving measure
- carbon disclosure the Carbon Disclosure Project
